Windows Phone Tango Features And Limitations Revealed In Leaked Screenshots

We’ve been hearing a lot of chatter lately around the rumored Tango update that will run on low-end devices like the Lumia 610 or the Lumia 601.

A couple of leaked screenshots from a Tango Windows Phone have revealed some of the features and limitations that both the OS and the device will have to face once it will begin shipping to emerging markets.

Thanks to the guys at wp7forum.ru, we now know that the 256 MB RAM limitation on Windows Phone Tango devices will probably restrict access to some marketplace app and cause a warning message to be displayed, cautioning about the low hardware specs of the current device.

Also, OEM manufactures will even be allowed to place 3 megapixel cameras on Tango devices, thus lowering production costs and trimming down purchasing prices.

This in turn could lead to some fragmentation within the Windows Phone community, but at least we have some other interesting features that have been added to compensate for the hardware shortcomings.

For one, you’ll be able to attach multiple photos and videos to a single MMS and even record your own voice.

There’s also a rumor that the amount of preinstalled apps will jump from the current 16 to a whopping 40 default apps.

Being able to manage contacts directly on the SIM card is something that we were all wishing for ever since day one, and Tango appears to allow that and more.

Another downside that will seem to plague the Tango update (and implicitly Tango devices) will have to do with streaming files.

Tango will only support video streams lower that 4 MB and H.264 v2 encoding, meaning that this will severely limit your online streaming capabilities.

Whether or not this compromise in hardware and features will turn out to be a good combination, we’ll have to see.

Considering that Tango Windows Phone devices are targeted toward emerging markets, it’s safe to assume that these features will have to do considering that Windows Phone mobile platform will offer pretty much the same features.

We’ll just have to wait for the Mobile World Congress and see what Microsoft and Nokia have prepared for us in terms of Tango devices and the Tango update.
