Porting Apps to Windows 8 Is Achievable – AlphaDrops Demoed

We’ve been entertaining the idea that Windows Phone apps can be ported to Windows 8, but we never actually saw an existing app being demoed on a Windows 8 slate until now.

AlphaDrops from Rick Walrond has been demoed in the video below as running on Windows 8 without losing its gameplay value or overall look and feel.

Rick say that it took him about two weeks to actually get the coding behind the game done, but at the same time, 90% of the original Windows Phone code was being used on the Windows 8 version.

This goes to prove that if indeed Windows Phone Xbox Live games will be able to be ported onto Windows 8, developers won’t have to rewrite their entire work and only a couple of minor changes will be added.

Of course, the exact controls and Metro panorama screens weren’t added in the Windows 8 version of AlphaDrops, but Rick found a way of building features like Preferences and Help right into Windows 8.

We guess that having a Windows 8 developer slate really helps the experimenting process if you’re thinking of porting your Windows Phone apps to Windows 8, but it won’t be long now until everyone will have access to Microsoft’s new desktop OS.

Also, we’re probably going to see some updates in the current Windows Phone SDK that will include some Windows 8 libraries and sample codes, so don’t despair just yet if you think you’ll have a hard time wrapping your head around it.

Anyway, check out the video above and kudos for Rick Walrond (we can’t wait to check out AlphaDrops in the Windows 8 app store).
